No. 4001 - Union Pacific - Thompson Springs, Utah
Deep black coal is transported west along the Book Cliffs in eastern Utah. The tracks here are the former Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad's that now parallel I-70 for the most part between Denver, CO. and Green River, UT. Green River isn't that far west of Thompson Springs. Thompson Springs was quite the railroad town in its heyday including a passenger station and wye connection to the mainline for the branchline to the coal mines the Sego Canyon, north of town. Many things led to the demise of Thompson Springs including the construction of I-70 a couple miles south and away from the Old Cisco Highway which still passes in front of this old roadside cafe now closed for business.
